5 out of 5 stars Bets tech toy I've ever received... bar none   May 28, 2009

This is wonderful, free book sources, use of local library and other state library resources, now working to obtain newspaper and magazines on the screen. One small unit and I've got everything to read. As a recruiter I get 30 to 50 resumes per day and I download them to the Sony to screen while at lunch. Buy one, I can't find anything wrong to speak of with this item.

4 out of 5 stars Great Product With a Few Kinks to Work Out   May 24, 2009

I'm really happy with my Sony e-reader. Most of the e-books I get are PDFs and it handles those with no problem. I don't notice the slight blink when I 'turn pages'. I get a lot of questions about it, too, when I take it out in public.

A few small issues: I don't really care much for the software that comes with the Reader, but I can just drag-and-drop the books into the right folder on the book and it's all good. It doesn't handle all the formats I'd like it to; .LIT files, for instance. Also, it seems to lag a bit more with a lot of books (like, I threw fifty on there just to see if I could) loaded onto memory.

Overall, It's a good buy, well-worth the money (especially if it's tax-deductable for work like mine is) and should give you lots of reading pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars I am in love!   May 22, 2009

I am in total love with this product. I decided to go with the 505 over the 700 due to the screen being of lower contrast. Being that I have never owned a e-Book reader before, I had no idea what it would be like. It is exactly like a book, in fact the screen is so good, that there are times I think there's a label on top like a display model.

PROS:
-Metal design. This was a major reason I went with Sony instead of the Kindle.
-High contrast.
-Minimal ghosting.
-Includes the cover! For $359, the Kindle doesn't even include a cover. Yes the cover is sort of crappy, but at least it's something.

CONS:
-No lighting. I really don't care, I don't have a light when I'm reading a normal book, why do I need one now?
-No dictionary or search.
-No wireless. I don't need another reason to buy more e-Books than I need.
-No AC adapter included. This is a second cost. However, since I have a PSP, you can use the same charger for both. You can also opt to charge via USB, a cable is included. Note this is a standard miniUSB cable.

This is a great reader. The pros far outweigh the cons. If you want some light, you can go for the 700. At the Borders in SF, they have both side by side so you can compare. You can also get a cover with built in light from Sony.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Live Without it now....   May 17, 2009

Love, love, looooove my Ereader. It's perfect size. The print is easy to read with little to no eyestrain. (the only strain would be badly formatted PDF's, not the reader's fault)

It's lightweight and the pages turn easily in 2 locations. I'm a reader on my lunch/dinner breaks so putting it up right and just having to use one finger to turn the page and not have to get the book all messy is just awesome!

I had it for 3 weeks before I even recharged it--and I still had time to go, it was only at the halfway mark on the battery.

The only issue I have is sometimes I hit the side control buttons instead of the page turn button and I've screwed myself up a time or two to get out of that function to find a page. I know how to back out now, but the first time I totally went back to page 6 and I didn't remember what page I was on.

Great product. For once, Sony did something very, VERY right.

4 out of 5 stars Great hardware, good software, but not-so-good ebook store   May 9, 2009

I really don't understand the kind of people working at Sony, from the CEO to the engineers to the marketing people. Here, as with many other Sony products, you have very nice hardware (lightweight, great contrast on the screen, high build quality, plays MP3 music and shows photos), decent software (Sony's eBook Library program mimics iTunes, esp. in the latest version 2.50), yet the e-book store leaves much to be desired. The book selection is still limited -- two years after I bought the PRS-505. Recently they made a big deal out of the 500,000 public-domain books from Google Books available for free and in native format for the Sony Reader -- yeah, a big deal if you like books from the 1800s or early 1900s. (I actually found an excellent book on Beethoven scanned from a library at my alma mater, but the majority of books are utterly obscure and useless.)

I recently considered buying a Kindle 2 but the high price point and the poor screen quality have prevented me from doing so. I really wish Sony hires some smart marketing people and brings real Sony Reader-compatible books to its store.
