Read the Manual and Do your Research July 12, 2010 Ciara Brinson 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
So, I bought the nook a few weeks ago when the price cut went into action and was constantly going back and forth with the thoughts of buying this, or buying the kindle.I bought the device with 3G simply because it was only a little more, and I travel a lot and don't have house wi-fi. I remember when I used to scoff at the nook when walking into B&N and can't believe I ever did that! I love the feel of being able to go into the bookstore, with my nook and feel connected to the actual store. I will admit you have to do your research (read forums, articles etc...) because the nook demo employees, are not going to know everything. Also you MUST read the 'manual' and follow it to a 'T' Don't take the reader out of the box and drain what little battery you have left because you're going to have battery issues (needing it to drain completely a few times and then fully charging it before the battery is at full capacity)
A lot of people may think their nook is 'frozen' when actually the battery is drained, and when that happens the screen is set to whatever screen saver, book page etc you were on when it died. There's no 'power-down' it will just stop, and touchscreen will not be active, once you plug it up and charge it a little, it will be good again. Also the constant use of the touchscreen will drain the unit faster (obvious unfortunate fact)
There are a lot of books available at the moment (depending what genre you read) especially for teen and sci-fi and fiction (my books), and I was surprised to see all of the 'lend me features' for a good portion of the books I was interested in. Also B&N really listens to complaints and proves that with upgrades (faster page turning, less freezing etc.)Also even when there was a manufacturing error, they were quick to send out a new improved nook. Overall, I love this device, it's fun, its sleek with a solid feel, and it's open-ended for future updates.
It may be for you, it may not. Do your research, read forums and reviews, go into the respective stores and hold and try the device.

No wonder Apple decided to get in this game July 12, 2010 K. W. Hagen (Houston, TX USA) 3 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this at my local B&N store Sun evening & returned it Mon morning. It failed immediately -- it freezes up while reading an eBook. It is inexcusable that a brand new item could fail this quickly. I did some quick checking online & found other uses with the same problem & stories about the software version (1.3 vs 1.4) or the battery being to blame. Quality control & acceptability testing at manufacturing should've caught this defective unit. I'm not going to waste my time debugging their devices. No wonder Apple decided to get in this game.
Hmm......not impressed July 12, 2010 Benjamin A. Sylvester 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
I recently bought this item through an actual Barnes and Noble store and not through Amazon, but had to write a review on this anyway. Long story short books sold on the nook seem a bit pricy and I'd say about a buck or more than the books sold on Kindle or similar stores. On top of that, after purchacing my unit and buying over 100 dollars worth of books, the thing locks up and took forever to come back. Brand new right out of the box...first day. The processor inside is not terribly fast either. I'm not sure what they are using but...I'm not sure how reliable this device is.
I'll be taking it overseas with me. I'm not looking forward to finding out just how fast this thing gives out under those conditions.
Awesome reader! July 11, 2010 Just the facts, Maam 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had my Nook for several months now and I love it! I had been thinking about purchasing an e-reader for a while, but I have never liked reading for long periods of time on a computer screen--never realizing that devices like the Nook (and the Kindle) use a different type of screen that is totally different then a back lit computer screen.
Being able to go into a B & N store and actually handle the Nook was what finally sold me--too bad I didn't wait until the price dropped!! Plus, the store personnel were very helpful and they even have a class on Wednesday nights for new Nook owners or those curious about it.
One thing that pushed me to the Nook over the Kindle is the ability to read library books digitally checked out from my local public library. This does require downloading a (free) piece of software called Adobe Digital Editions onto your computer, but there was a very clear set of instructions on the B&N message boards relating to the Nook--a good place to check out if you are considering buying one.
One comment I will make is that if you like to read books with pictures or diagrams in them the Nook (and probably the Kindle too) is not the best thing for you. The Nook will display pictures, but not in the clearest or easiest way. Its best for reading straight text like novels.
I quickly determined that a cover was a good idea and ordered one--at that time my local store did not have any in stock (now they do). Its probably a good idea for most people, but there are a variety of covers and cases available (in store, online and from other places such as Best Buy--so shop around and look at some).
If you like a certain author, genre, etc, I highly suggest exploring whats available as that could very well influence your decision. I am a very eclectic reader and have been happy with whats available so far. B&N does tout the fact that free books from Google book are available for the Nook. I have downloaded a few of those. Most of these are older and the scanning quality is not always the best, I do like historical books, so this is of some interest to me, but it might not be for you.
I do travel from time to time and had no trouble at all going through security at the airport with my Nook and its great for traveling to have a variety of books i one handy gadget.
The Nook also allows you to read a book for free for up to an hour if you are in a B&N store and I have done that several times and I do like that feature. You can also download a free sample of most books, but its often only a few pages.
I highly recommend the Nook, I am happy with mine, but do suggest you check out the message boards on b&N's website and see if a store in your area offers a class where you can check out the nook in detail.
I love my Nook July 10, 2010 millie michalski I received my Nook for my birthday on July 2nd. I love it! I wish it had a "use finger across screen" app. to turn the page. I don't like the click I wait for using the arrow system. I thought I would never use a reading device like this....I was going to stay pure and read only paper books...but I must say....I do like the Nook.
