5 out of 5 stars 1.4 Upgrade is GREAT!   July 16, 2010

So after reading numerous upon numerous reviews about kindle vs nook....I took the dive and got the Nook...I could not be happier. After reading all the reviews, pretty much all of them talked about sluggish performance...sluggish performance that no longer exists with the new 1.4 update. That is pretty much the selling point right there. B&N can constantly fix all of it's bugs through a simple software update. Is it perfect? No. At least now my pages turn quickly, there's an internet browser, I can always connect to the bookstore via 3G or wifi, I can use the buttons to turn pages or simply just swipe the screen to turn, there is also a nice cover flow to help search through books. Anyway...overall I am happy. Can I sit here and say it's better than the Kindle? No...for I have not tried the Kindle. I do suggest that if you're curious about the whole e-reader craze of late, just head into a B&N and take a look for yourself. If you don't like it, don't buy it...if you buy and decide it's not for you, then just return it since there are no restocking fees...and if you end up buying and keeping it, there's also that piece of mind that if anything does happen to your Nook, all you have to do is take it to your local B&N and have them take a look at it for you...

*A BONUS: If you take your Nook to a B&N and show them what ebook you're reading, you get a free cup of coffee...not sure how long this will last but hey, free coffee is free coffee :)

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ebook reader!   July 15, 2010

I bought this product a month ago and I absolutely love it! During my research phase of buying an eReader, I went back and forth on this product because of all the negative reviews. However, with the new upgrade and price drop, this device is definitely one of the best on the market. The greatest thing about it, is that you can personalize the screensaver to whatever you want. The screen is fantastic as well as the touch screen at the bottom. You can turn the wifi off (via airplane mode) for longer battery life and set the touch screen to turn off after so many minutes. This also has the option for replacing the battery yourself as well as removable storage (memory cards) so you'll never have to worry about running out of space.

BUY THIS PRODUCT!

5 out of 5 stars I love my Nook   July 14, 2010

I normally dont spend much time writing reviews, but once in a while its nice to walk off the road.

Last few weeks I spent lot of time researching for good ebook reader as my wife was in the verge of divorcing me for filling the house with more books than bricks.

I had no intention of remarriage or time to look for another girl.So I thought better change my reading habits. I compared so many readers out there in the market and after all the research decided to go by Nook.

I love it in every sense , after the software upgrade the page turns are super fast and I always liked the design of nook. Now I am reading more than what I did early and was able to read books like "The Stand" , "Shogun" without spoiling my eyes with mass market paperback's tiny print that otherwise would have needed a magnifying glass.

So dont hesitate go buy a nook, its the cheapest and the best in market.

Ps: I am a happy married man now.

Although nook is pleasant to look at and the reading feature is excellent, the pros end there. The capacity of the system running nook is slow and has the tendency to freeze or throw you out of a function and/ or the online system. I don't know if these problems are caused by the capacity of the system itself or the instrument. On July 13 I was thrown off BN's system 23 times and the nook froze a total of 34 times.

When using it as exclusively a reading instrument I would grade it as very good. Any other functions would get a grade of poor to fair

4 out of 5 stars Very good product   July 13, 2010

If you are looking for first-rate PDF support, look elsewhere. Otherwise, it's a well executed first attempt. I used it for a week and returning it was not an easy decision.

1) PDF support is lacking, I can't read many of my technical PDF books (and documents) and even after I bought a pair of magnifying glasses (text size remains unchanged for some of my PDF's, like "Mastering Regular Expressions" which I have just downloaded from Safari). I seriously think that my technical PDF ebooks deserve better zoom support or a bigger screen.
2) If you take into consideration the cost of hardware and ebooks, and the inability to buy used ebooks, I feel I am paying more and getting less, I compared the first ebook I bought from BN, "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond, with a printed book(ebook for $9.99 and gently used copy for $7.47), after I noticed that some material was missing, like all the maps and black and white photos, and I was able to confirm the missing pages and figures.
4) The dictionary is hard to use (usability issue, the cursor is very jumpy).
5) Returning the Nook to a BN store was a nightmare (horrible customer service), it's very sad since the gentleman who helped me with my purchase was as nice as competent (this recent event is tipping my choice towards the Kindle DX)

Here are the reasons why (before the nightmarish return episode) I thought I will give BN and the next Nook a second chance:
1) The Nook rocks, (mostly) easy to use, the screen is very good, very easy to hold and page navigation is awesome.
2) Page turns are fast enough that I didn't notice any substantial delay.
3) A DX competitor would be a very interesting addition (as well as adding the ability to create folders).
4) EPUB format is supported.
5) The staff at my local AZ BN was super friendly (I wrote this before it was returned).
6) BN's decision to base the software on Android was brilliant, Android is solid enough and maturing super fast (Amazon should make the same move).

This is what the Kindle DX needs to get me on board:
1) External memory card access.
2) EPUB format support.
