4 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed   July 26, 2010

I work with both computers and law. This means that at any given time, I am likely to be carrying around one or more programming textbooks and a large binder of legal briefs. I bought a B&N nook a few months ago to see if it could help me get things in order, and while it was great for reading novels, the small screen couldn't handle the sort of highly technical documents I need to read.

The Kindle DX works better than I could have imagined.

Not only is it large enough to display non-OCRed PDF documents, which you can pan and zoom, but it actually auto-crops each page so the text is displayed with small, even margins. I can load scanned copies of textbooks and they display almost like the real thing (I was getting noise in my scanned documents until I realized that the color data was messing it up and converted the PDFs to grayscale).

I also love the web browser function. I'm always finding long articles online that I'd like to read, but I find it hard to stay focused when I'm on a computer. Now I can just use the free 3G to load the articles directly on the DX. The reader formats online text just like an ebook, and the lack of distraction means I get my reading done more quickly than ever before.

I took one star off because Kindles are associated with Amazon's DRM-infested ebook business, but if you get your books from other sources, the device warrants 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars More capable than I expected...   July 26, 2010

I jumped on the Kindle DX when I saw the price come down and the contrast go up. I've found it to be more relaxing to read on than my laptop and the iPad (see my customer images comparing the iPad to the KDX), and I'm not able to switch around between windows and interrupt my reading "flow" on the Kindle.

I've found that the KDX is somewhat heavy but have solved that by getting the new Amazon cover for it with the elastic band. This allows you to prop the KDX up in several different ways and makes it much more relaxing to hold it. I understand one reason why there are no "page" buttons on the left - with the cover folded out on the left side they would be hard to reach anyway.

One thing I did not expect was the number of tools on the 'net for aggregating content for the Kindle. Calibre is a free utility for downloading and converting a large selection of blogs, magazines, newspapers, etc for free to the Kindle. Another favorite is Instapaper which allows you to set up a bookmark on your browser bar called "Read Later". With this bookmark, if you are reading a long article you can press the bookmark and it will save the url of the article on the Instapaper web site. Periodically, the web site can send all the articles you have bookmarked to your Kindle wirelessly as a sort of personal newspaper. Its really cool.

I'm looking forward to vacations and not having to take my normal bundle of books along with me!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT....   July 25, 2010

Ordered the first one as an anniversary gift for my husband. Wrapped it up and gave it to him. He unwrapped it and took it for a spin and I was hooked. That night ordered the second one...a few days later it arrived and I haven't looked back. It's great!

For those who want to organize their ebooks in folders, it's called Collections on the Home Menu page. Now I have specified collections (folders) for all my needs. My Kindle is now organized and very easy to use.

3 out of 5 stars Kindle DX in Canada   July 25, 2010

On the whole I am pleased with my purchase. However, there are some flaws which would do well to be corrected. The main problem is that there should be a page navigator on the left and right of the screen. I don't always want to use it whilst holding it in my right hand and it is inconvenient to have to always use my right hand to turn pages.

The display is fine. I would love to have the fancy tricks that the iPad has, but then I can sit in the direct sunlight and can read comfortably. Try that with the competition! Whisperlight works OK where I live in southwest BC, though it is slow. The unit is heavy to hold for prolonged periods but it does well propped in front of me on the breakfast table whilst I eat my cerial.

My biggest gripe is that Amazon launched the newer version of the Kindle DX days after I had bought mine. I would have appreciated the company either to have given me a discount on the old version, or the opportunity to upgrade to the newer version at no cost.

1 out of 5 stars Listening to Justin Bieber is more educating than reading books.   July 25, 2010

I was at starbucks last night and was listening to the latest justin bieber song when some jerk told me to 'turn that crap down' as we was reading his Kindle DX... at first I told he was looking at a clipboard LOL!! but then he explained to me that hes working on his degree and needs quiet time to read and study. I laughed because what does reading do for you besides hurt your vision and make you fall asleep!!!!! LOL!! I told him if he wanted to get smarter... to listen to the AMAZING lyrics that Justin Bieber sings.....

Avoid buying Kindle DX and stick with reading/listening Justin Bieber lyrics!
