1 out of 5 stars No Digital Restrictions Management for me   August 6, 2009

I will not buy a Kindle until all of the Digital Restrictions Management is removed.

1 out of 5 stars 1950's sophistication   August 5, 2009

this has got to be the most poorly designed and poorly engineered and cheaply made device and most expensive on the electronic market today.
for one thing, there is only one side that controls movement and these are electromechanical switches which must be pushed hard to work. if you read with enlarged text and can read more than 100 words per minute, guess what, your hand wears out before you want to quit. it's pretty obvious that this was engineered in detroit or at a minor engineering college.

they should have had the porsche design people help out. this thing may be second on the market, but if sony puts its mind to it, this device won't last long.

good idea, very very bad execution

1 out of 5 stars No Digital Restrictions Management!   August 5, 2009

I don't want Amazon to control, which books I read.

I don't want Amazon to change or delete my library.

I don't want to pay the price of a book for the mere right to read an ebook. I don't want to pay for my right to read at all.

I want to own the books I paid for.

I want to read the books I paid for wherever I want, to whomever I want, whenever I want. And I don't want Amazon or anybody else to watch me read their books, unless I invite them to.

I want to read ebooks. But I don't want Kindle, because what Amazon and the industry calls "Digital Rights Management" in fact is a "Digital Usage Control". And I don't want to be controlled. I want the freedom of read, as much as I want the freedom of thought and the freedom of speech.

1 out of 5 stars Decided not to buy Kindle DX   August 4, 2009

After reading the reviews about the Kindle DX, I decided not buy it and to keep my Sony E-Reader. I wanted the larger screen, but when I read about the lack of customer service, warranty, cracking due to the cover (which I had planned to buy), cracking due to dropping, I decided that the cost did not justify moving from the Sony E-Reader to Kindle. Too bad -- I really liked the features, but it is too expensive to replace.

4 out of 5 stars Love it - Only small improvement points   August 4, 2009

I debated a long time whether this device was worth the price, and after just one week, I can say I love it. I read hundreds of reviews on the Kindle2, Kindle DX, and Plastic Logic's device. I even considered waiting on Apple's new tablet (I love my Mac and I-phone). I think if anyone is an avid reader, you should have this device.

Pros
* It makes reading easier and more enjoyable than books, magazines, or newspapers. After you learn how to navigate, you almost forget you are reading on it. The images are clear, the text is adjustable (for old eyes like mine), and PDF's even look decent on it. In full sun, the DX is easy to see, no glare, and does not fade. At night, yes you need a light, but I am use to reading by light.

* I read several comments about lefties may not like it because of the one-sided navigation on the right. Not true. I am left-handed and I barely notice the navigation controls (lefties are rather resourceful though). I think a touch screen would make it easier to navigate, however, fingerprints on the screen would be irritating.

* I read on it, my girlfriend reads on it, and my nine year old son loves it (he never looses his place) - we read almost every night and the Kindle makes the time even better.

* The size of the screen is good for me, and the weight of the device is not noticeable. The device itself feels good and looks even better. The Kindle DX reminds me of something Apple would design.

Cons

* Newspapers and magazines are not full content, yet the subscription prices are. There are a few choices worth it, but most of the content in this area is over priced and limited. I am hopeful that Amazon can persuade these firms to realize print is on its way out. I know that I would subscribe to full versions of USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times if they were available, but not the limited versions. - Revised - The New York Times has improved now worth it.

* The battery life with wireless on runs down in about 3 days, I have not tried turning off the wireless to conserve juice. Although it is not quite what was promised, I still think it is acceptable. - Revised - battery life is averaging about 5 days with wireless on.
