4 out of 5 stars Kindle DX Graphite is the best eReader   July 24, 2010

I finally bought a Kindle and decided on the DX Graphite. The somewhat crude control and lack of a screen input (touch or stylus) prevents me from giving it 5 stars. But as a reading device it is clearly the best. I experimented with the iPad for a while and have used Tablets and Desktops to read with for years. The ePaper display is a perfect reading medium. My eyes have not experienced any of the fatigue I get with a backlit display even after hours of reading. I have completed two full books after only a week. So far I have read mostly PDF material which I have not found any issues formating of native PDF or scanned PDF documents.

The Kindle would be a perfect device if it permitted stylus input for note taking and I think enhancement to the experiment browser would be very helpful. Color for me provides little advantage from a pure reading perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Great device for reading my ebooks   July 24, 2010

I bought the Kindle DX as I had purchased a number of PDF ebooks over the years and wanted to be able to read them without having to be sat at a computer. The screen is nice and large and the fonts are readable. I have been quite impressed with the quality of images that the kindle produces.

Being able to browse the kindle store from the device, make purchases, and wait while they downloaded to the device was a novel and entertaining experience. No need to be connected to the computer !

I don't read much fiction. By and large I use my kindle to read I.T. books so my reading experience is probably different to most other users. What I mean by this is that I often have to cross-reference different parts of the book, or skip back a few pages to review an example, and then return to where I was. Changing pages takes 1-2 seconds so if I have to go back several pages or more it can take some time to get there. One way of getting around this is to add a bookmark if you need to return to a particular point frequently.

I'm based in the UK and when I purchased the kindle the browser functionality wasn't available, but with the latest firmware functionality that has now been addressed. The browsing capabilities are quite limited but it is still a useful function to have when you're out and about.

All in all, I am very happy with the kindle.

I am new to the Kindle and love it. I have had it for a few days and have been reading like crazy. I was nervous on how people talked about the screen being prone to breaking and/or cracking and I always have had bad luck, so I did buy the additional warranty.

A couple things: First, I ordered it on a Monday evening and had it Wednesday afternoon already. It was a breeze setting up and getting it started. Literally, you just pull it out of the box and it is ready to go. Second, I cannot believe how fast it downloads books. I am talking like less than 15 seconds! I did buy a cover for it and love the cover as well. The cover I bought allows me to prop it up and read hands free...love that!

I am truly impressed with the screen...its size and how it doesn't hurt one's eyes at all. I stare at a computer screen all day at work and I was nervous getting the Kindle because of that reason and having more eye strain. It isn't like that at all.

I found the user guide, which is loaded right onto the Kindle and on the home screen to be extremely helpful on getting to know how to perform certain tasks.

Overall, love my Kindle DX. No problems thus far. Love it, love it, love it!

4 out of 5 stars High points for screen ! Low points for weight and portability !   July 24, 2010

I am a previous owner of the original K1 followed by the K2 (6 inch screen). I decided to upgrade to the graphite KDX after selling my K2. I have to say that reading is a pleasure on the KDX. The screen is awesome and the pictures are clear! I enjoy reading pdfs of journal articles, newspaper and magazine articles on the DX. Reading books is also a much better experience on the new KDX than on K2. However, I miss the portability and lightness of the K2 which is why I give the DX 4 stars. I carry a mid-size purse and the DX just does not fit in it. It is also a bit heavy to hold when reading. I would love to own both the K2 and the DX but that is not an option right now. At some point, I do plan to purchase the smaller 6 inch screen Kindle when the next new version comes out. I could use the small Kindle while I am out and about and the DX for reading at home or work-related stuff. Either way, the Kindle is a wonderful product for serious readers.

2 out of 5 stars Global users do your homework before ordering!   July 23, 2010

A small review for international users:

+Pearl ink screen is awsome for reading, among the best readers on the market in screen clarity

+excellent contrast and picks up surrounding light easily making a normal lamp efficient.

+Kindle software is mature, stable and renders pdfs ebooks well. Not many restarts and responds fairly well to keyboard and navigation input (for an eink reader that is)

Some downsides:
- In fw 2.5.5 seems like Amazon intentionally crippled the browser on the KDX (that's what I've been by Amazon support) to english wikipedia and Kindle shop only. I researched on the net and there are german, italian, french users verifying the browser actually works. It turns out they had an earlier firmware and not the new KDXG.

- There's no such thing as free books on Amazon.com or Kindle shop on the device for Global kindle users - they charge you 2 dollars for wireless data transfers.

- I found 4 swedish books in kindle format awz on the internet (there are more but nothing later than 1990's)

- PDF experience still a bit crippled: viewing is limited (portrait, landscape takes of making fonts bigger) zooming is a hit and miss most of the time. There are many basic pdf features missing like content links, highlighting, notetaking, most importantly increasing font sizes wich I miss so much from the native kindle awz format. Amazons own format got some love and tendering while PDF functionality is a recently added in feature that's recently got slammed in, there's alot more to do here Amazon.

- You can't change dictionary (I can't buy a swedish dictionary) converting a dictionary is to big of an effort. You can't have swedish keyboard layout - a couple of languages are supported for now.

- Limited european kindle content (in my language at least) Surf the web and check for content.

"The screen technology is great, the crippled experience for Global users is not."

Competitors eventually picks up this new eink pearl screen with european/global users in mind (You pay for wireless functionality, you get a crippled experience - only english wikipedia and Kindle store works. You pay for pdf support, you get a half baked solution where zooming is more like a picture viewing fixed 150% 200% 300% zoom levels you can't increase the font size and so on.

Amazon time to pay attention to your global users instead of selling them a crippled american experience - at least let users choose wifi access, browse simple sites, prescribe rss feeds, improve pdf functionality with font size increase, so that we can make it without the restrictive Amazon kindle store for users outside the us.

Verdict?
One star for Amazon shipping, excellent service and costumer support!
One star for the new pearl ink screen on the Kindle DXG with better contrast!

The KindleDX Graphite is going back to amazon - I feel like I'm buying a crippled device. I will wait a couple of months till a more european friendly kindle arrives. I hope my input was helpful to all of you considering buying a KDXG outside US and my feedback to Amazon continue improving the product. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment.
