5 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for!   March 4, 2010

Kindle has been on my wish list from the day it was introduced! But I live in Thailand so I couldn't have one. Then came the Global Edition and still Thailand was not on the list.
In January 2010 I noticed it was finally available here. I ordered immediately and 3 days later it was in my hands. It's a gem! Everything I hoped it would be! It even syncs with my iPhone.
Well worth waiting for!
I only have one complaint and that's the fact that quite a few of the Kindle Titles are not available for people living in Asia, yet I can order the actual printed books from Amazon.
What's that about?

5 out of 5 stars Best 'toy' ever   March 4, 2010

Wanted to get this for ages and waited patiently for it to be available in the UK.
I already had the Sony Reader (Touch) which I love - but wanted this for the wireless ordering and to be able to search Wikipedia.
Tha Kindle is fantastic - the best gadget ever - although it can hardly be called a gadget.

I love books and reading and having this has enabled me to read much much more and in greater variety. Far from signalling the end of paper books - I think the Kindle compliments books perfectly. I will continue to buy printed books - but use this for bedside reading and travelling and reference all the time.

Best things about the Kindle DX-
1. The size is just about right.
2. The screen definition is superb.
3. Built in dictionary and searchable Wikipedia on wifi
4. The battery lasts for ages between re-cahrges.
5. It even looks good

Sadly - in the UK the basic internet search function is disabled - but this is only a minor gripe.

4 out of 5 stars Good product!   March 3, 2010

We really like the Kindle. It's very easy to use and extremely flexible to adapt to the settings you like (orientation, # of words per line, size of text, etc.). I love how you can download the first chapter of a book for free to see if you like it. My son who is dislexic loves that he can limit the number of words on a line so the book isn't as overwhelming. He also uses the dictionary feature to learn how to pronounce and understand words he doesn't recognize by sight. The only disappointing thing for us is that we were looking forward to the text to speech feature for our son to use, but so far the childrens books we've downloaded don't have that feature available.

5 out of 5 stars Australia   March 3, 2010

The Kindle DX is excellent and mostly extremely convenient and efficient.
2 things could be improved: it would be handy if the storefront had a newly added subcategory. I am interested in reading widely and at times I don't know in what area or genre I want to read so this would be a real boon. secondly, and this applies only to Oz, the unavailability of books in Australia is very frustrating. Books that are shown on the Amazon website as available for Kindle in the US are not available here. Curiously not a single Peter Carey book is available for download in Oz but some are available in the US. Copyright I guess but he is Australian!!

4 out of 5 stars kindle all over the world   March 3, 2010

Just a few months ago I would have decided against buying an e-reader because of its rather steep prize and the torment of booting a PC every time I want to purchase an electronic book.
Well although I am sitting by the beloved PC now to write this review, anything involved in buying and reading a book can be done with the Kindle DX alone, even out of reach of your home WiFi, thanks to wireless 3G broadband access without additional roaming fees. So I can shop a book or magazine sitting here in Sweden at a fair price. You don't get the pretty pictures but you escape annoying ads as well, that's all I need to consider it a good deal.
In brief a list of other +/-:
+ great choice of popular english titles at reasonable prices
+ long battery life (weeks with wireless access off)
+ reasonably sized screen
+ built-in english dictionary
- needs some support/armrest when reading more than a few pages (weight is more like a textbook than a pocket book)
- sparse choice of German titles currently (or whatever your favourite non-english language might be)
- single web-store, single hardware provider
