5 out of 5 stars fantastic and fun reading   September 13, 2009

This reader is amazing! Downloads are fast and the library is huge. The screen utilizing the E-ink technology is very readable and clear, with great grayscale images as well. Prior to owning this device, I never really had or took time for recreational reading, but with the Kindle DX, I can't wait to get back to reading my growing library of books, periodicals, and news media. For me personally, one of the most helpful features is the ability to vary the font size. I can even read without my glasses on, if I want, with very little fatigue due to the extremely clear E-ink screen. Sure, there's more frequent page turning with a larger font, but the device is so well designed that this is not a bother to me at all. I have looked at other brands of readers, and this is by far the very best version of the very best reader there is. Enjoy!

Love it. Use it every day. Better than taking multiple books on business trips, and can shop from my chair wherever I am.

I'm a writer and while some have been slow to accept the Kindle, I'm more than ready. After two months with the DX, I can't say I'd change anything. Yes, the price is high and that will keep some people away, but you know what - you get what you pay for. There's the occasional book that I wish was available, but 90% of the time it's there, it's cheaper than hardback, and pow - Whispernet puts it on the device in seconds.

The big screen is the selling point for me. My best friend has an original Kindle and I wasn't fond of the small screen size. I read fast and with that, it was click click click and it felt like it was slowing me down. With the DX, the big swath of screen allows me to really get into the experience of reading rather than dealing with the technology. You'll quickly forget that you're dealing with a device rather than just reading. I guess if you like the feel or want leatherbound books in your mahogany paneled library, Kindle's not for you. Neither is the 21st century. What I want is the ability to read the best books in the best way, whenever and wherever I might be.

Oh look ... I carried thirty books with me as I went from my desk over to the patio. Let's see you do that with your old books.

You know what feature I love that meant nothing to me originally? The integrated dictionary. Even the smartest of us will come across a word in a book and go "huh?" Click click - I just learned a new word.

The screen's clarity is great. The keyboard ... eh, but you won't mind because there's really few occasions to use it and it's good enough for those. The speakers, same thing - good enough. Size? I think that's love or hate. I like the big size, but if you think it's too much, the Kindle 2 is for you.

The biggest deciding factor for me was the PDF support. This year's "Football Outsiders Almanac"Football Outsiders Almanac 2009: The Essential Guide to the 2009 NFL and College Football Seasons -- to which I am a contributor -- was available as a PDF download and carrying that monster of a book with me to radio gigs or events was always a hassle. Now? It's just another file, perfectly readable with all the charts and graphs. I can't wait to see my next book on there.

Is the Kindle DX for everyone? No. It's expensive and for early adopters willing to accept that there's a cost involved with being on the leading edge. It might be a bit big for some. I'm still VERY unsure about newspapers on the Kindle. For everything else, this truly is a revolutionary device that has done exactly what I hoped for and one more thing - it's reminded me how great it is to read, to be lost in the works of great writers, and made it possible for me to read more. That's worth the price and then some.

I have macular degeneration and couldn't read most books. Now I can enlarge the print and read comfortably.

3 out of 5 stars Needs a few tweaks!!!!   September 12, 2009

For the money, the Kindle DX is just OK! I like the idea of having a library that I can take anywhere. It's very readable.

On the other hand --

1. The power cord is very cheaply made and after about 2-3 mos of use falls out of the connection. There are some after-market cords that are much better. BUY ONE OF THESE!!!

2. Diagrams and pictures are fair to poor at best. Be careful of "How to..." books; it's hard to follow along if you're using pictures and diagrams to follow along instructions.

3. The "Designed for Kindle" leather cover which hooks directly into the device actually BREAKS THE KINDLE. DON'T BUY IT!!! (Especially since Amazon does not consider the breakage "under warranty."
