We purchased the Kindle DX for our 89 year old mother, an avid reader who was having vision difficulties. She had tried magnifying glasses, magnifying sheets, and large print books; yet, reading was still a strain and no longer enjoyable. Plus, large print books from her favored authors were not plentiful.
We looked for a similar digital reading device in our local bookstore. They did not have one on display. However, while discussing the issues with the salesperson, another patron chimed in and raved about her Kindle (6" model).
We viewed the Virtual Tour of the Kindle DX, read some reviews, and an article from AARP remarking on the readability of the device, esp for the visually impaired.
She loves it! The screen size and font selections are great. She is once again able to sit comfortably and enjoy reading. She has no difficulty holding it (it is not heavy), operating it, or navigating to and through the Kindle Store. And, most of her perferred authors' books come in a Kindle Version.
The qwerty keyboard is small, which is fine as it leaves more room for the larger text screen. My only suggestion is to have the keyboard keys labeled with larger and darker print. However, even the way the keys are labeled now is not insurmountable.

Easy to download books. I am visually impared, but can see the screen text with the largest font size. When in the speech mode, I thought the rate of speed was too fast even at the slowest speed. Hard to get into the speech mode due to the small size of the window. I do like and use the prouct.

The Kindle itself is a great product. The way Amazon sells the product can be VERY deceiving. If you are purchasing it to give as a gift, be sure to make sure you mark in check out it is a gift otherwise all YOUR credit card info in already stored in the Kindle for future purchases. Be sure that the recipient of the gift understands that they will now need to set up his/her own Amazon account and then attach the Kindle to that account with his/her credit card information. Amazon is not very helpful or co operative on trying to straighten out the situation should it be given as a gift and not marked as such on the order.

I received my Kindle DX as an early Christmas gift,and I love it so much,that I purchased a Kindle for my daughter.
The ability to have so many books at my fingertips, is truly a dream come true for this bookworm. It is the best gift ever!!!
Makes reading books so much easier December 3, 2009

When I got my Kindle DX I was a little surprised, how small it is (and this is the largest model so far). I also would like to be able to set longer time-out, before it goes to sleep. But all in all, I like it very much. Compared to clunky laptops and heavy paper books, Kindle is much, much more convenient to use. I read a lot more now.
