3 out of 5 stars Kindle DX valuable but limited   December 25, 2009

I love having a lightweight way of carrying around the often heavy books I read on my Kindle DX. This convenience has enabled me to read more often when I am traveling and I value it highly.

The screen contrast is, at best, mediocre. I have to use larger type sizes to make the text easily legible even though I never have a similar difficulty with printed material. Also, the illustrations in the books I have bought have poor contrast and poor resolution, and they lose much of their impact and information content.

I have not found a convenient way to browse through a book, its illustrations, notes and index.

Despite these limitations I'm very happy I have bought the Kindle D.

5 out of 5 stars Love my new Kindle DX   December 25, 2009

I received my Kindle DX as a gift and could not be happier! I am very pleased with the user friendly software and the ease with which I can find and purchase books. Love the larger screen and the ability to change the layout. The combination power and USB cable is innovative and very well made. I love the ability to download documents and .jpeg files from my laptop. I am looking forward to many happy hours of use. What a wonderful gift!

5 out of 5 stars Not expensive, not even close to being expensive   December 25, 2009

This is my first review of any product prompted by the N.Y. Time article on Christmas. I just had to speak up for my Kindle DX.

It is not expensive. Imagine the cost of one book case. Imagine buying book cases for all those books the Kindle holds. How about the floor and wall space in the home you give up to book cases? Now the Kindle looks like the best bargain ever.

Add up your time looking for one of the books out of the book case... which book case, upstairs, downstairs, in the bedroom, check the brief case again, family room, the car, did you leave the book at work? I always know where my Kindle is and all my books are there.

I'm not going to comment about all the nice features the Kindle has because others have done a great job at that. I'm totally satisfied with my Kindle DX and migrating from a Kindle 1... all my books I bought for Kindle 1 were accessible for my Kindle DX.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing product that changes how much your read   December 25, 2009

I purchased DX since I have a long commute and like to read computer books on the train. It works perfectly for that. Almost all computer books in PDF format render well but a few require minor editing in Acrobat to reduce margins (so main text would become bigger). There are plenty of free fiction books in mobi format which paginate better than PDFs. I do not use protective case but put the unit into a laptop case while carrying. A few times software hung so I had to find a way to reboot it (holding power switch for 15 seconds) and once in a while PDF rendering reboots the Kindle.

Battery life for me is around 2 weeks with disabled radio and auto-pivot. Reading New York Times on Kindle was somewhat disappointing. It required to open every article within a section, instead of showing headlines and deciding which ones to read. Enabling wireless drains batter really fast. I am sure it all depends on the strength of Sprint signal. The weaker the signal, the more power cell transmitter uses.

Speed of pagination is acceptable for sequential reading but is rather annoying while looking for something.

The best "feature" for me is that my eyes do not get tired while reading Kindle.

Overall it is an amazing device and small flaws do not damage value it brings. I was debating if the rating should be 4 star or 5 but eventually decided that for me it is much closer to 5 than to 4.

5 out of 5 stars Kindle DX review   December 24, 2009

My husband is enjoying his Kindle DX immensely! It is easy to use, very responsive and fun! He has downloaded several books already, the first of which was an NIV Bible. He's enjoying these on the easy-to-read 9.7 inch screen. I would say this was his best gift this year!
