For the Sun lover and reader in you! July 23, 2010 Penelope Collyer 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It does all it says. Unlike the iPad, I can comfortably sit and read outside in the sun or semi-shade without any difficulties. When I first started, I thought the page turning would bother me but I quickly got use to it. The dx can be held in one hand or rested on your lap. I find the battery less than the two weeks because of frequent usage. For audio reading Pdf (school or work related) the computer voice does fine.
I use it to listen and read my pdf journal articles for school and work with easy and comfort. The highlighting took a while to learn the technique but now I am able to highlight like a pro. I appreciated that the highlighted sections are referenced to allow for citation. The smaller keyboard works acceptably because most of your actions are with single word searches or the five way button. Unlike the iPhone screen, the dx allows for a comfortable page of reading material. To read in bed, I turn off the auto-adjustment for screen positioning. The multi-gray scale displays pictures and graphics are fine for reading materials. All and all I am happy with the device. I have ordered the car charger and earphones for long car trips plus a slip to protect it while I am not using it.
One complaint.. I am spending too much money getting books for it! LOL!
Die hard reader, never thought i'd like an ebook reader July 22, 2010 kam13 (NC United States) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love the Kindle DX. I ordered a 6 inch Kindle initially, on a whim, to see what all the fuss was about. I expected to hate it. I love books, the smell, the weight, opening a new book for the first time. I was surprised to really enjoy using the Kindle. I didn't mind at all. I loved the portability of being able to turn it sideways or upside down and adjust the screen as needed. I didn't have to constantly fight to keep the pages open or in place. I read outside, or on my stomach or side a lot, and the Kindle is perfect for whatever position or environment i want to read in! I upgraded to the DX after realizing I like the 6 inch version so much. My only complaint about the DX is the lack of buttons on both sides as compared to the 6 inch Kindle. However, the auto-rotate feature of the DX compensates.
I did purchase a waterproof case for pool and tub reading and the one I got works great.
Very happy with the Kindle, never expected to be!
Love my new Kindle DX (Graphite) July 22, 2010 Ho Silver 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was on here b*tching about the price of the DX, and now that the price dropped (and the contrast is improved) I'm back to say that I'm very happy with it. I love the higher contrast - huge improvement over other e-reader displays.
Battery life seems to be much shorter than advertised and I'll be taking this up with customer support - maybe it's just a bad unit. If I were to actually read a lot in one day it would drain a full charge.
It will benefit from continued development, but I think the Kindle is a leader of pack.
Awkward to handle July 22, 2010 Kitsap-Tucker 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased the Kindle DX recently, and am now in the process of returning this and purchasing the smaller, standard size Kindle.
I have been an e-book user and devotee since the early Rocket ebook days, and *loved* and used my old Gemstar/RCA REB at least weekly until the support went under. This made it even more surprising to me learn that the Kindle DX is so awkward to hold that it is extremely difficult to read it comfortably. Either the layout on the device is oriented so that the controls are easy to us, which make them too easy to hit by accident, or you have to re-orient the layout, but now the controls are not as accessible. I also found the DX to be too heavy to hold and read for any length of time. This is a personal viewpoint, and is not something that can be corrected by a design change. Someone with greater forearm strength would not find it to be a problem at all.
I am looking forward to moving my purchased content onto my new standard Kindle device. I only wish this model was available in the Graphite as well.
no coverage July 22, 2010 Maggie 3 out of 14 found this review helpful
I live in Central Maine. Your Kindle is worthless to me as you now use ATT as your provider, which does NOT cover our state. Is there an option for folks who have GREAT cell phone coverage with other plans? Signed a woman who lives in the white zone of your coverage map.
