A great purchase July 23, 2010 ProfCrash 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
My Kindle 1 was the best gift I have recieved. It has been my constant companion over the last 20 months. I am sad to say that I have set aside my K1 in favor of the DXG. The DXG is simply a great reader. My K1 will continue to see use as a reader for guests to use but my day to day reader will be the DXG.
I have been waiting for the DX to drop in price for over a year. I was thrilled to see that the price drop was accompanied by a new screen with better contrast. I love my K1 but felt that the time was right to upgrade. I am thrilled that I did.
I am coming from a K1 so the difference in contrast is really, really impressive. What has thrilled me the most is the addition of collections. I can finally store all of my books on one device and find what I want easily. It took a while to download and sort everything, the process itself was easy, just time consuming.
I like that I can rotate the screen so that I can read with the buttons on the left or the right. I tend to find that I prefer holding my Kindle in my left hand and was happy to find that it is easy enough to make that adjustment. Either rotate the Kindle so the buttons are on the left and read or manually adjust the rotation by pressing the font size button. This is also where you go to alter line spacing, words on the page, and to turn on text to speech.
I have yet to use the PDF capability so I cannot report on that.
As for the size, I don't find the DXG to be too large. I plan on using it in and out of the house. I have already brought it with me to the Doctors office and Physical Therapy.
sorry it took so long to make a decision to purchase. July 23, 2010 Jeanette Howard (TRENTON, MI, US) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really love books and was reluctant to go to Kindle. I am amazed at how quickly Kindle became my very good friend and I am never without a book to read, night or day. Having said that, my only regret is that I purchased a week before the price came down. Senior that I am every dollar counts.
Two are better than one! July 23, 2010 Dr. Ameil Klein 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
First things first: Our Kindle DXs are as good as all the positive reviews we keep reading here and elsewhere. Living in Germany, we needed a way to easily access and read English-language books, avoiding the hassle of ordering, waiting, and being occasionally disappointed with what arrives. The Kindle, we thought, might be appropriate for our English-language book needs. It was and is! My wife's arrived in June. Using it immediately with complete satisfaction for her reading, she thought another Kindle would be an appropriate Chistmas gift for me. Envious of the fun she was having with her Kindle, I became impatient and ordered mine just four weeks after her Kindle arrived. It is now my companion for many hours a day.
The reasons for our complete satisfaction:
Having lived many places in the world during the past fifty years, we have often had to leave our books behind as we moved from one country or continent to another. With the Kindles we now take our books with us. That's no small plus for us because we are often on the road in our motor home. No matter where we are, in our little cottage or in our motor home, we are able to download the books we want to read. This feature works unbelievably well. And,finally, the ability to read a sample from a book that interests us makes our Kindles well worth the money the paid for them.
A Registered Nurse's Experience July 23, 2010 ICU Nurse 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I am without a doubt a super tech nerd. This review is coming from a 23 year old male ICU Registered Nurse who owns just about every gadget you can think of. The only e-reader experience I have had includes the iPad and the nook. I love my iPad, however, despite all of the amazing things I use it for, the reading experience seems to be more of a "proof of concept" than something actually practical, at least as far as marathon reading is concerned. The glare on the iPad in anything but a low-lit room is pretty bad and despite the numerous ways it offers to dim the backlight, adjust font sizes, and even the paper color itself (sepia and black for example in the kindle app), I still find my eyes silently cursing me for making them stare at the LCD screen while trying to read. That, and I am always distracted by all the games, web browsing, and other things I can do with my iPad. Now the nook, is an very good product. The e-ink screen is great, albeit the text on the screen seems to get choppy with the smallest font, but overall it is a fantastic reader. The reason I went with nook as opposed to the original kindle was simply the whole "brick and mortar" experience. Being able to walk into the store multiple times, touch it, and experience it first hand is something that is instrumental in a gadget's success in my opinion. However, despite being a great overall reader, the screen size started bothering me. I grew tired of having to press next so soon and so often, that eventually I stopped using it. I had my eye on the kindle DX for quite some time, however the price and lack of ability to experience it first-hand were major deterrents. However, with the recent price drop and the snazzy new graphite color, I took the dive and purchased one.
I have very much enjoyed my kindle DX experience. The amount of text you can fit on the screen as opposed to the more traditional 6 inch ereaders is amazing. As a matter of fact, my entire nook can be placed in the DX screen! I digress. The page turning is quite speedy, the overall OS seems much faster and more responsive than the nook experience, and the dictionary on the kindle DX runs laps around the nook and its touch screen. Over the past two weeks, I have read more than I have in months simply because it is such an enjoyable experience now. The weight of the kindle DX feels perfect. If you have read any of the behemoths that are Stephen King books, than surely the kindle DX will not cause any arm of wrist strain whatsoever. You'll be surprised the first time you pick it up. The screen is clear and crisp, definitely a step up from my nook. The keyboard works great. I was at first hesitant on not having a page turn button on the left hand side (I am right handed btw), however with the amount of text you fit on the screen, it doesn't bother me whatsoever and requires only a minor adjustment. Considering how great it is to have such screen size, it is a worthy compromise. The buying experience has been top-notch (almost too easy, I spend way too much money on books now!). Also, the customer service from amazon is and always has been amazing. Compared to my experience when my nook froze and took it to the local B&N to get fixed only to be stared at like a dog who has just been showed a card trick (Bill Hicks!), amazon has been fantastic with everything. I feel reassured to have a product backed by this company. I highly recommend the kindle DX to anyone who enjoys reading. It will no doubt enhance your experience.
Excellent product July 23, 2010 Talon Philippe (Brussels, BE) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I live in Belgium and have hesitated a long time before crossing the river and buying a Kindle. First of all, I was astonished by the speed of delivery. It took only two days to get mine ! Dowloading books is so easy, fast and, for most books, cheap enough. Morover, when you choose a book or an author, Kindle store shows you related products and I've found many titles I did not know about. Excellent work. The Kindle is easy to use, I only had a bit of difficulty in upgrading to the last version of the OS, so I could use Collections. This feature is essential in order to organize your library. All in all, I am a completely happy customer.
