4 out of 5 stars Kindle Review   February 22, 2010

I am a book lover. I get excited over a cool cover, the feel of the pages, the weight of a nice thick book, and even the new book smell. So I was a little hesitant about the sleek thin kindle, particularly when you can't look at one or play with it before you buy it. Even though I am a electronics lover I was really not enthused about an e-book, until I got one for Christmas. It is excellent to read from, much easier on the eyes than a computer screen. Order a book and it arrives literally seconds latter, whether you buy it through the kindle or online, and you are off and reading. I like the feel of it and it is very simple to use. I have to say that the first one I had died after a week but Amazon customer service (which is the best of anyone# was amazing. After failing to revive it they had a new one in the mail and on the way to me within hours. The humidity here makes books musty really quick, so I can't even keep a book after I have read it, but with kindle I have all my books anytime I want then mildew free.

Now here is the bad part. The prices for kindle books are way too high. If I was in a place where I could get free shipping or cheap shipping I would never buy a kindle. But I am not. For example a new release hard cover may be $14 but the kindle version is $12.50. So printing and distribution #both from the printer to the retailer and then onto the consumer) of the book is only worth $1.50? Or in the case of a paperback a difference of 50 cents? Not to mention the cost of the reader itself has to be factored into what you are paying for the kindle version as well, so in reality it costs more to get a kindle book than to buy the old fashioned paper version.

So for me I love the device itself, it's outstanding, but if it wasn't for my current isolated location, I would still get paper books.

3 out of 5 stars Compact, sleek design but the interface could be better...   February 22, 2010

Pros: Long battery life, love the display, MP3 built-in (although the sound could be better), sleek design, compact and the leather cover make it look like a diary which is really cool. Comes with a really handy Oxford dictionary. Buying e-books online may turn into a new addiction. The kindle became the envy of all my friends who saw it.

Cons: Just like all Aussie owners of the kindle, I have to get myself a USB charger that work with the Kindle. Luckily, I went through the forums and reviews beforehand and got the right charger even before the kindle arrive (delivery was impressively quick). The screen maybe a little small for some people but it doesn't bother me. The loading of pages could be faster. No zoom function for pdf files which is fixable with a converter but not fixable if the pdf contains lots of images. Kindle + images = disaster, so don't think about getting magazine subscription/newspaper and hope to see those beautiful pictures in your kindle. If you want colored pictures, get an IPad.

5 out of 5 stars It's reignited my love of reading   February 22, 2010

After months & months of fighting the urge to get myself a kindle I finally gave in and ordered one. All I can say is WOW! Best $300 I've spent all year. In the 2 months since it arrived I've already read more books than in the past 2 years. If you're thinking about getting one just give in to temptation and click on "Add to Cart" now, I can't see how any lover of literature could possibly not fall in love with it once they've given it a fair chance to impress.

Bought this product for the text to talk feature but found that most titles are not allowing this feature. Otherwise is a very good product.

I've only had the Kindle for 2 days, but I'm loving it! I would definitely recommend this to a friend - AND I WILL!!
