My new best friend August 31, 2010 sibyll (West Chester, PA) I read. A lot. And I take a book with me pretty much everywhere I go. The Kindle makes this much easier, and I can take SEVERAL books wherever I go! My Kindle has been to the beach, to the mountains, and to the pool. I got a lovely pouch for it on Etsy, so it's protected from scratches and drops (yeah, it's been dropped a few times, but no problems).
As long as the wireless is turned off, the battery lasts for weeks. The wireless eats it up faster, but only turn it on to download books.
I suppose this would be better if it had a touch screen, and you didn't have to scroll with the menu button to highlight or access the dictionary. But if you really want that, get an iPad. If you only want a great reader (book replacement), at a great price, the Kindle is the way to go!
The Best Thing Ever! August 31, 2010 K. Chamberlin (AUSTIN, TX, US) I have the 2nd Generation Kindle and I simply love it. At first I missed the act of flipping pages, but I got over that so quick!
I have spent a small fortune [to me anyway] on kindle books since I received it in February. At least the prices are around half the cover price unless you shop somewhere like a bargain/used book store.
The only thing I dont like about the kindle is the text to speech. I've only attempted to use it once and the recording was awful! The man was so monotone that I turned it off within seconds. If the rest of the books are this way then I highly suggest someone working on this.
Other than that, this is the best investment I have made for myself in forever!
Traveling with the Kindle August 31, 2010 Fort Warrior I recently flew with the Kindle and found that the airlines are being more clear that Kindles must be turned off during takeoff and landing, like other electronic devices. I left mine in sleep mode but kept it tucked away. The downside of the Kindle is that if you're stuck on the tarmac for a long taxi and take-off, you can't read your book, which I found very frustrating, so a magazine is useful to tote along as well.
Also, I prefer to carry it with me rather than leave it in a car on a hot day, which could damage the battery, so sometimes I have to tote it along even though I won't be using it.
Other than those two issues, I love traveling with it!
Excellent Buy August 31, 2010 Spain Excellent purchase! It was advertised as new and when I received it, it was never used. I purchased it for my sister and she absolutely loves it.
Kindle is great! August 31, 2010 Michelle M. Sevilla I recently purchased a Kindle for my mother in law for her 50th birthday! We wanted to get her something she would love and enjoy. She calls at least once a week letting us know the new books she's purchased and how much she uses her Kindle. We couldn't be more happy with the outcome of this gift. However, I am a little disappointed that I am not seeing commercials about the black Kindle for only $139 when I paid $169 for a refurbished white one. But all in all it was a great purchase.
I would like to also take this opportunity to caution buyers about using your credit card online. After purchasing the Kindle off of Amazon my debit card number was stolen and used to purchase vehicle warranties totalling over $1000. I would strongly urge people to make their purchases through paypal and not your everyday account.
