Love my Kindle February 6, 2010 Shala Kerrigan (Anchorage) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I really can't believe I didn't review this earlier, but I just went through all my past reviews and sure enough, I hadn't. Well.. that could be a good thing. I've had it about 10 months now so I've had time to really put it through it's paces and decide how much I like it.
It's lightweight, easy to use, and it didn't take me any time at all to get used to the e-ink screen. It's very easy on the eyes. When I have a headache I can increase the font size for easier reading.
I use it constantly, and the battery still holds it charge for days. I'm not kidding. I can and have sat and read 3 books in a row on it, had it on for 8 hours at a stretch and had no problems with it. The controls are very easy to use and get used to. I was expecting a longer adjustment time but within a week it became my preference for light reading. I can bookmark any page and type a quick note on the keyboard if I want to remember something for later. Handy with all the public domain cook books available for free.
I live in Anchorage, Alaska which doesn't have consistent fast coverage, but even if a book doesn't download in under a minute, it rarely takes longer than five.
It sets up nicely on the lip of the elliptical I use at the gym so I can read while working out.
I use just a standard clip on light on it when I'm reading in bed.
I read a lot. At least a book a day, some days 2 or 3. Whenever I can, I get digital so I can read them on my Kindle. It's saved money, I have no impulse control with books. My husband likes the fact I'm not buying as many dead tree books, and even more, likes not having to stop and pick up chick lit occasionally. Recommended for serious readers!

The kindle is a great product, reading is easy. I like the ability to increase the size of pdrint, but I would like it better if there were a back light!
KINDLE February 6, 2010 Bernadine Pickett (Washington, MI) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Love it other than the speaker freezes on me sometimes and I can't get it to turn on after pausing it for more than a few minutes. Love this feature for when I'm driving long distances and want to listen to my book when I can't actually read.
Best Present Yet February 6, 2010 Cat Lady (Eastern Shore of Virginia, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My mother is a woman of "a certain age" who received the Kindle for Christmas.
There were four steps that lead me to make the purchase.
1. My sisters and I were stumped this year, but she had read an article on it and "mentioned" it--very briefly, but nevertheless she commented on it.
2. One of my sisters and I were on a plane ride to Europe and our seatmate had one--it was his wife's original but he got it when he bought her the new one. They both loved it.
3. I had received an offer from a book club for free downloads that I had loaded on my minibook--long vacation and the downloads worked fine on the minibook. I relayed all this to my mother when I got home.
4. Then I had the Amazon page open and my mother saw the word Kindle and commented again.
That was it.
That's a long lead-in that explains how the idea of e-books went from nice to a purchase.
Remember when we first heard about cellphones? Could you live without yours now?
I've downloaded 20 books or so for both of us in less than 50 days. We'd been members of book clubs for years, and used the purchase of the new books we wanted to meet our requirements. Therefore, the $9.99 price for new releases didn't seem so bad. Some of the books were FREE and others less than $5.
My mother loves it. Absolutely. I've used it and love it.
Think of all the space you save. The prices of books are less than Sams Club, Costco, BJs, etc. It reads just like a "real" book and you can register multiple devices to use your books--I've added my minibook to my account. A charge on the Kindle lasts for ages. Some books are free. The ones you could get in paperback cost less than the paper copy. You can pack enough books in less space than a paperback to last for a month--great for travel for work or pleasure.
If you are considering any other product, make sure you check the price of the books. I could have got a slightly cheaper item but the book downloads were a lot more expensive, more than erasing the slight purchase discount on the e-reader.
Like I said, it's like when we first considered buying our first cellphone. You couldn't live without it now.
The Kindle works February 6, 2010 James W. White (Alameda, CA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought the Kindle for my wife, primarily for her to use with her book club. She was thrilled on Christmas day; the setup and book ordering process went smoothly and after getting a cover to protect the device she's been happily carrying it around and using it regularly. My only complaint is the limited number of titles for sale.
