Better than the Nook January 13, 2010 Hope Garcia (San Francisco, CA) I purchased the Kindle 2 for a friend as a Christmas gift; I already have the Kindle 1 and love it. At the time, the Nook came out (same price) so I compared the 2 and found the Kindle to be superior. Another friend has the Nook and we both found the touch screen technology to be difficult and uses up your screen space. the keypad is touch screen also. He complained that the first books he wanted to purchase were not available for the Nook; his selections were from the Best Seller's list or newly published. My Kindle 2 friend can't put her's down; she's extremely pleased with it.
I love this January 13, 2010 Sarah Keiser (California, USA) This is the best e-reader on the market! I have looked into others and this one makes it the most like reading a book.
Loved it but no coverage January 13, 2010 T. OGrady-Walsh (Washington D.C.) We bought for our folks for Christmas because they were desperate for daily national newspapers. It worked great in Tampa over Christmas. But sadly, when they returned home to south central South Carolina, they had Zero coverage. They live in an area of South Carolina that supposedly has AT&T 3G coverage but no-go said the Amazon/Kindle customer service rep from somewhere in South America. The service rep told our folks that they could spend an hour every morning and download to their computer then transfer it over to the Kindle. "Kind of defeats the purpose of waking up and having coffee with the morning paper," said my folks but the statement was lost in the translation.
Too many books are unavailable January 13, 2010 S. Conover Let me start by saying I LOVE my Kindle. Unfortunately if you don't limit your reading to current Best Sellers, it may be hard to obtain the books you want for the Kindle. I have just spent several hours looking at books I want to read and NONE of them are available for Kindle. I had hoped that I could buy most of my books in this format, but guess that is not to be. Also be aware that books with tables, graphs, etc. are often unreadable on the 6" Kindle even though they are offered in that format.
Just as I expected it to be! :) Very satisfied. January 13, 2010 cyncyn (Toronto, Ontario Canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have wanted a Kindle 2 since it was available back in Feb. But being in Canada, I couldn't get it. Oh sure, there were ways around it but it was just too much trouble and I wanted to do things the right way! Then finally, the international version came out and I was devastated to find out that Canada was not included. At that point, I thought to myself, it'd probably take a few years before it gets Canada. So I bought a Sony PRS 300 instead. It wasn't my first choice but it was pretty much the only other option that was reasonable. 4 days later, the Kindle 2 became available in Canada. I was crushed!! Do I keep the Sony Reader(had it shipped from the US as it was a special promotional deal) and regret that I didn't get the Kindle? or suck it up and pay the shipping back to the US and return the Sony reader? well, I did neither! I put the Sony online and sold it that same night and ordered the Kindle. However, I had it shipped to a relative's place in the US as I was heading there for vacation. And I have done tons of research on the Kindle before I bought it so I knew all the ins and outs of the device before I even got my hot little hands on it. I knew all the limitations of being in Canada but I was willing to accept them since my main purpose was to read on the device. And sure enough, it did not disappoint! It did EXACTLY what I knew it would and wouldn't do. When I was in the US, my browser was working but it was VERY slow...not reliable at all. But at least it worked and sure enough after I got back to Toronto, it didn't work except for Wikipedia. But all the books that I've downloaded have appeared within a minute just as Amazon said it would. And the prices are $2 extra but still cheaper than buying a paper copy. And I have gotten epub format books on the Kindle with no problems. Just need a program to convert it(I'm no computer whiz and I was able to do it so I think most people will be ok as well).
I especially enjoy the free chapter sample option. It's really useful and you end up saving money as you will not buy any books that you don't like.
All in all I am very satisfied with the product. Just do your research, browse the bookstore before you buy it to make sure it has the books that you want. Know the limitations of the international restrictions and you will have no surprises.
In the meantime, I'm going to continue to enjoy the Kindle and hope that they'll figure out how to let us outsiders have the browser and blog access very soon!
