Saves money: can borrow public library eBooks July 29, 2010 caceemommy (Edison, NJ) This doesn't have snazzier features like the Nook, Kindle or iPad. If you are an avid reader and don't tend to collect books, the big advantage of the Sony Reader is that you can borrow eBooks from the library - this saves a ton of money! I only wish the Reader was wireless. You have to connect to a computer with Adobe Editions (easily downloaded) in order to borrow from eBooks from the library.
Great price, great functionality. July 25, 2010 R. Gile 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If it were possible to rate in halves, I would actually rate this a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I purchased the Sony Reader about a month and a half ago, and love it. It's priced reasonably, and is incredibly convenient. I have no problem with screen glare, and have read in bright, direct sunlight with no problems on more than one occasion. The only reason I don't rate it a perfect score is because I don't use the Sony software that comes with it, as it is clunky and inconvenient.
Instead, I use Calibre [...] an e-library managing tool that was originally developed for the Sony Reader but has since expanded to cover all ereaders, and is compatible with both Macs and PCs. Because of Calibre, I'm able to convert my books to various formats, download RSS feeds and read them whenever I want, as well as many other handy features. When combining the Sony Reader with Calibre, I'd say it's downright perfect. So far, I've been downloading books from Kobo Books, which sells in many different formats, including Sony Reader's .epub, and Feedbooks, which covers free public domain and original books.
I've been using this reader for awhile now, and it works like a charm with my macbook, a feature I was concerned about when shopping for an e-reader. All in all, I've had no negative experiences so far.
Best fir portability and in price. July 22, 2010 Sarah Helton (Kentucky) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love my Sony Pocket reader. It is extremely easy to use and is a perfect size. I'm handicapped and have a hard time turning pages, especially paperback books. This was the perfect solution. After shopping around I purchased the Sony Pocket Reader, a leather cover with light (which works great), and the AC adapter ALL for under $220. I think I would like to have one with more options, but for the price you can't beat this reader. You can't buy Kindle books, but you can use it any where else. Also, I was pleasantly surprised with the prices and selection at the Sony Book store. I highly recommend this reader, especially if you have a limited budget.
Loved the product until . . . July 16, 2010 REBECCA FOSTER (TONAWANDA, NEW YORK, US) I loved the unit but unfortunately after using it for only a week the unit froze and I am in the process of returning the item which is taking an incredibly long time. So all I can is it is great . . . when it is working!!!!
Great e-book reader. Replaced my physical books! July 10, 2010 ML 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Sony Pocket Reader does one thing very well: gets out of your way and lets you read!
This is a great e-book reader and one of the best gadgets I've had the pleasure of owning. You can easily hold the Reader in one hand. It reads PDF files, epub, et al and does reflow very well.
This device is a solid, clean stainless steel. I haven't dropped it yet but I feel like it could survive a fall or two.
The Sony Pocket Reader replaced my physical books. No more need to lug kilos of books on trips or on the train. I just stash the Reader in my pocket and I'm ready to read.
There's a delay between screen refreshes. What that means is that when you flip pages, there's a brief delay before you see the next page. It's not really very distracting and most e-book readers available in early 2010 have similar issues.
Make sure you download the Calibre ebook software. It's far better than Sony's.
For those of you wondering if your iPhone suffices as an e-book reader: it depends! If you're reading entire books, you'll really enjoy the e-ink in the Sony Pocket Reader. The larger, e-ink screen is much easier on the eyes than a small LCD.
Overall, highly recommended!
