I think this one sucks July 31, 2010 Steven Mosquito I really don't like it! First of all, the contrast is really bad (well, in my case I am reading Chinese articles, and it's much worse than English). Second, and most annoying, there is always a shadow of last page whenever you turn to the new page!!! This is ridiculous! What a technology! I have already bought a new Kindle which does not have this problem at all! This shadow will give you an impression that you are reading two pages at one time, imagine that! And they only allowed to take it back with half the price I bought it, which is extremely ridiculous, since I read for only one hour and then put it back, and it's still completely new. ANyway, I have already decided to give it to my friends in CHina.
Buyer beware! April 28, 2010 LGS (Eastern Washington) Had my little reader for 2 years and Opted to send my reader into Sony for the upgrade rather than purchase a new reader in January. It came back quickly but had gouges on the screen from a box cutter! Sony said they would fix it for $400!! Claiming it arrived like that. Any survey they have since sent to me I have given my reasons for not wanting to do business with them any longer! Last week a Sony rep called wanting to update the battery, which wouldn't last more than a few hours, and he said they would fix my screen. So, I sent the thing back in and got it again today with the same box cutter gouges. I emailed the repair group and got back that they are not responsible and the unit works just fine!
Just purchased a Nook!!
Great, but new buyers need more info November 19, 2009 Kammi (In my own little world) Quite honestly, there are much better reviews out there than I can write myself, but I believe that anyone buying this version of the Sony Reader (500) needs more information. As of November 2009, Sony has issued an email to current 500 Reader owners to let them know they are updating the 500's firmware to be able to use a different format of e book and it will no longer work if it is not updated. This is not a simple plug in and download it yourself issue, you need to mail your reader into them to have them install this update. They say it will take 14 days to get your reader back, I know if I was buying my reader at this time, and found out after the fact that I had to immediately ship it back to Sony for an update for two weeks I'd be ticked. This is not to say you shouldn't buy one, only know that if you buy this version, their first generation of readers, you will need to send it in to them. They give you a prepaid shipping label for you to ship it to them, so there is no shipping costs to you and they do the update free and ship it back, you pay nothing extra except for your shipping and packing materials.
As for the reader sans update, I have no problems with it, I can easily carry multiple books, the battery lasts an amazingly long time, the pages are easy to read and font size is very easily adjusted. I hope if you buy a reader, no matter the version, that you will enjoy it as much as I have.
Really enjoy the product August 17, 2009 Howard W. Meister (Laguna Beach, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't taken the "real" time to compare to the Kindle but I must say I like using this product a LOT more than I had expected.
Moving forward I could easily see myself not buying physical books again.
Sony Portable Book Reader April 8, 2009 Richard G. Sturdevant 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Did not like the product. First it only works with Microsoft software, not Apple. The downloading of books from a website was confusing and we were never successful in downloading books.
We returned product and bought a Kindle 2. Much better and easier to use.
