5 out of 5 stars Fits Kindle 3   September 4, 2010

I am writing this for those of you thinking of buying it for the new Kindle Three. The other reviewers have pretty much said everything else about it. Beautiful craftsmanship and a worthy compliment to the Kindle. Here is the good news. The new Kindle fits perfectly and securely in this cover. It is also light enough to hold for extended periods of time in one hand and the note part folds back quite nicely. All in all I am very happy with this cover.

3 out of 5 stars Not so useful as it looks   August 26, 2010

Looks pretty nice, like a Moleskine notebook. But it is too thick, so I end to use the kindle naked. The elastic bands are a worse sujection option than the Amazon one. Be aware that it seems better for lefties as the notebook is on the left.
Seems to be a nice design which hasn't been tested before launch it -no slot for pen, for instance-.

5 out of 5 stars Classy and sturdy   August 23, 2010

I've been using this cover for about a month-and-a-half now and I'm pretty satisfied.
First of all, the case looks great, understated and classy, like Moleskine's notebooks.
The addition of the reporter notebook is a nice touch. I know several people here have complained about its placement on the left side of the case (not sure if many of those reviewers actually owned it) but I haven't found it to be a problem at all for writing. Actually I'm kind of fond of the layout of the case, it gives the whole thing a very book-like feel. The extra thickness of the notepad also helps protect the screen from pressure and sharp edges, particularly when sitting in a briefcase or backpack with other objects.

The only real downside I've found with the case is its bulk. It does add some thickness and weight to the reader, and make it bigger to hold, but the elastic straps make it easy enough to take the Kindle out and read it "naked." I've also found the spine of the case is a great place to clip your $5 book light, so you don't have to buy a $20+ light that fits your reader.

Overall I think it's a good case, it looks nice and gives back some of the ol' analog feel to your digital reader, and it comes at a price competitive with many other cases that don't include the notepad.

4 out of 5 stars Bad ergonomics   August 23, 2010

Is not a good idea to have a block on the left side.
Very difficult to write if you are right handed.
The Kindle's on switch is covered by an elastic band.

3 out of 5 stars So close, and yet ...   August 17, 2010
Scott J. Walter (Minneapolis, MN USA)
Having been a fan of Moleskine products for years, I looked forward to checking out their foray into device covers. For the most part, it's a really good product, but I wish I could have rated it at 3.5 stars, as they missed the 4-star "I love it" mark with a couple glaring design flaws, yet it's better than a 3-star "meh".

First the good: Very solid design, much better protection than the Amazon cover. The Amazon cover always had me fearing I was going to rip out the hook that held the Kindle in at the spine, especially if I opened it wrong (upside down) which, being the dolt I am, I do frequently. Not a problem here, as the elastic firmly holds the reader in place. The Moleskine-esque elastic closing band is also nice, providing compact, safe protection for your reader.

Now the bad: Unfortunately, the top left elastic band partially covers the un/lock switch, making it a bit of a fight to get at. I've got to believe that, over time, that band will fray due to being pushed, scratched, prodded, and probed just to turn on/off the Kindle. That loss of the convenience I had with the old case dropped my rating from a 5 to a 4 right there.

Back to the good: The addition of the Moleskine notebook is also very nice. If you're the kind of person who reads books you like to take notes on (or in), this is an incredibly handy feature. While the Kindle has some notation capability, joysticking around a page to thumb-highlight some text before point-poking a note isn't the best experience possible (though that's not really what the Kindle is designed for). This may not be exactly the same as marking up a real book, but (with a little practice) it's close enough for jazz.

And one last bad: The thickness of the notebook added to the Kindle body creates a nice sized space inside the cover along the spine (which is a good thing). Plenty of room to store a pen, and one happens to sit nicely in the space without changing how the case closes. I say "sits nicely" because they neglected to sew any sort of strap, catch, clip, or elastic collar in the space to attach a pen to, and the case design doesn't have "ends" preventing what's tucked in at the spine from falling out. This oversight cost them a 4-star rating.

So, overall, it's a solid product. It's not bad, but it could have been perfect and they blew it. I still like it, I'm still using it, but I hate having to hack/mod things to compensate for design oversights of this kind (perhaps Make magazine's site will have a hack or mod or two on how to overcome these flaws).
